Another commenter brought up apartheid too. However, I meant “apart” as the counter to “together,” with no relation to “apartheid.” Togetherists embrace globalization and America’s leadership role in underwriting and shaping it, while Apartists see more burden than benefit and want to try and reverse it.
But with multiple readers thinking there might be a connection between “apartist” and “apartheid,” I’ll have to think about whether I should come up with a different term to avoid the confusion (or if I’m okay with some thinking there’s an element of overlap).
