Syria is both hard and complex. There are many players, and many things going on at once. Assuming it’s simple risks serious error.

It’s relatively straightforward for Assad, who was caught up in the situation from the beginning. His choice basically boils down to fight or flight. But for external parties — who must decide whether to get involved and, if so, how much — it is anything but simple.
