It’s a mix. Trump won 63 million votes, and, even though he has low approval ratings (in the 30s), millions and millions of Americans still support him. That’s a large coalition containing all sorts of reasons.

But the research shows the biggest predictors of Trump support are (in order):

  1. Republican party identification
  2. “Cultural anxiety”

Both of those are more tribal than policy-oriented — supporting “us” over “them,” rather than believing any particular policy proposal will improve their material situation.

But just because those are the predominant reasons for the group in general doesn’t mean they’re the main or only reasons for every individual.
