I didn’t use the word “crazy,” and didn’t juxtapose it as the alternative to political. Terrorism is political, and I referred to non-political violence as “personal.” It’s about motivation, not sanity. Both terrorist attacks and non-terrorist violence could be perpetuated by people who are sane/rational or people who are delusional, incapable of determining right from wrong, etc.

I agree with you on tribalism. It’s unfortunate how many prominent voices have felt the need to force these shootings into a larger culture war paradigm or search for equivalence, as if being able to say “both sides!” would make rhetoric that encourages terrorism okay (or at least not as bad).
