A lot of that sounds good to me. Two things:
- The current NewsFeed is effectively democratic in the way you describe. It’s just doing it algorithmically based on user behavior rather than asking everyone first. A survey might change it a little by giving less active users more of a say relative to the current system, but there’s still the same problem of relying on people who share inaccurate and sensationalist news to identify which news is trustworthy.
- I like your fact-checking idea quite a bit. I didn’t specify what asking experts would look like, and think you fleshed it out nicely. That being said, it would run into the same problem of some people rejecting the assessment of what you refer to as “so called experts.” The vast majority of people who share fake news do so because they think it’s real (or don’t care), and do not appreciate (or believe) anyone telling them otherwise, even if the fact-checking methodology is transparent. Basically, a robust, transparent methodology is much better than the alternative, but no matter what they do, some people will be upset. No way around it.
